Curse of Chucky (2013)

October Challenge Day 9:

Every once in  a while you encounter that horror movie you laugh at even before you've even read the synopsis.

Cure of Chucky is one of those movies for me. Drained out killer doll story, right? Everyone knows Chucky, what more can be said....?

Well, here's why I'm watching it tonight (in no particular order):

#1: My Husband does not like horror movies - but he liked the idea of this one.
#2: Trailer was awesome.
#3: It comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
#4: Critics loved it
#5: You think you know the Chucky story? You don't, apparently.

I was beset on multiple sides. I've already seen a killer doll story this week. Harmony should be kept in a house of non-horror-movie-fans, Chucky is good and bad at the same time...and it is till early in the month...

I'm watching Chucky because I think I'll encounter something I'm not expecting. That is the heart of the horror story, is it not? It's also Friday night and this seems like a great Friday night film.

So here we go, folks! Cure of Chucky!  See you after the film! Good luck to you all...

Update!:

I'm getting sick. I could barely keep my eyes open past 8:30 last night, slept for nearly 12 hours and I still don't feel good! That is why last night's movie review update is being posted today and not last night. But it doesn't matter to those of you reading this review years from now...

In any case! I was able to make it through the movie!! I think this is an October Challenge record, ten days in and I haven't fallen asleep to a movie once.

Okay, review time: This is not your typical Chucky horror movie. Wait. That is not an accurate statement I can make - I've only seen the first Chucky film (Child's Play) and then this one. But you only need to have seen the first one to really understand this one!

Curse of Chucky is an intimidating and ominous horror film. Chucky is mostly in the background, silently doing his creepy doll thing while the sibling rivalry, infidelity, and down-right spooky house plays a larger role throughout the film.

Although Chucky is as evil as ever, in this movie the viewer is given a reason for it - sorta. Well, enough reason to say, "Ohhhhhh, I see!"

The story starts out with a couple of ladies who find a creepy doll anonymously delivered to their doorstep - and they bring IT IN THE HOUSE. Folks, we've learned this lesson already in my review of Dead Silence.

Oh well for them, entertaining horror movie for me!

Although still a little absurd, there's really no cheesy moments here, no slapstick, limited wisecracks, and a very little blood. Chucky is still hellbent on death and destruction, but now the only person trying to stop him is a young lady in a wheelchair.

I enjoyed the film very much. It's dark, somber, full of shadows and thrills. I can see why the critics raved about it (it's a well made horror film) and I can see why Chucky fans were conflicted (when you think of Chucky this is not what you'll be expecting).

An absolutely great film for a dark and stormy night. Best watched alone or with a small and silent group. Pairs with wine, soup or soupy pasta. For sick days I recommend a Chucky marathon (be sure you get to this one by nightfall):

Child's Play (1988), Child's Play 2 (1990), Child's Play 3 (1991), Bride of Chucky (1998), Seed of Chucky (2004).

I saw this film on Netflix streaming. Use the links under Find It. Watch It. on Horror Habit's side bar to locate where else you can find this killer doll feature.

The Prophecy (1995)

October Challenge Day 8:

Today's pick was a difficult choice! I had three I really wanted to see, narrowed it down to two, then ate some dinner and was certain on one.

But THEN I turned on my Netflix and everything changed.

I know I've seen The Prophecy, I can remember certain scenes - I remember loving it, but when I watched the trailer again I was all like, "What? Wait? When! WHAT? I don't remember that!"

I asked Mike which movie he was in the mood for. The one that I was *certain* on or The Prophecy. He said, "Walken wins!"

And so it shall be. Here we go! See you after the show!

Update!

I wasn't able to get my final review posted last night because after the feature I went immediately to my laptop and typed into Google: "Archangels fighting". Before I knew it, I was up way past my bedtime.

Mike has read the bible several times over, just for the hell of it, so he was able to fill me on a great deal of Archangel background. I, on the other hand, have never found Christianity interesting, fun, or the slightest bit entertaining. Someone starts telling me about the Apostles and my eyes glaze over and I start thinking about lint on their clothes, my clothes, etc.

This movie, however! This was fun. This was very fun! But like every religion, if you start thinking about it critically, the story falls apart and all logic shoots out the window. Check your mind at the door with this one and just enjoy the entertainment.

Now  I have a confession to make. I have never seen this film before. I know, I know, I know I said earlier that I had - but what I must have seen was one of the SEQUELS.

Blasphemous.

This is a campy, culty, strange, fun weird ride. I want more Walken as Archangel Gabriel and Viggo Mortensen as the Devil! More Wagab and Videv!

Watch with a group. Eat burnt crackers and have wine spilled all over the place.

I saw this film on Netflix streaming. Use the links under Find It. Watch It. on Horror Habit's side bar to locate where else you can find this cult classic.

The Mist (2007)

Well, since I wasn't able to see my originally planned movie (Kill List), I turned to something trustworthy, true, solid, and sure to be a great horror show:

I saw this movie once many years ago, but my Husband had never seen it - so this became the backup plan and what a great backup plan it was!

There were so many scenes I had forgotten, it was like watching it for the first time!

This is a stellar horror movie! STELLAR. Aside from the creatures in the mist, the religious zealots were the most frightening creatures in this film, but I'm jumping ahead...

A seemingly run-of-the-mill thunderstorm brings more than just fallen trees to this quaint New England town. It brings a mist that taints the town with total and complete chaos!!

There are monsters outside, there are monsters inside, there are monsters in the minds of the fearful. This movie is All About The Monsters - real and imagined. And that is just part of what makes this film so bad ass and completely terrifying.

Other things that make this movie awesome (in no particular order):

#1: Acting is great!
#2: Dialogue is so sharp it hurts.
#3: It was written by Stephen King.
#4: Fans of The Walking Dead - prepare to loose your minds over some familiar faces!
#5: The characters are so devilishly satisfying.
#6: The characters are so frustratingly real.
#7: It's SO SCARY
#8: It's SO SAD

Although this movie is all about the invading monsters, it's also heavily focused on the monsters people can become when faced with fear and the unknown. We can be some scary beasts....

Good movie for a small group or just alone. That said, though at first it's a fun horror movie for a gathering, it gets downright dark at the end and might be best appreciated with your own internal dialogue...and you might need a hug by the end....

Stellar horror movie. Stellar. I can't seem to think of another word, so it's going to be: Stellar. Very few quiet like this one.

I saw this film on Amazon Prime streaming. Use the links under Find It. Watch It. on Horror Habit's side bar to locate where else you can find this fantastic feature.

Kill List (2011)

October Challenge Day 7:

Today's movie picked has come highly recommended to me from several different sources. Time I take them up on their suggestions! Lucky number 7.

Although I'm not exactly sure what this movie is *really* about, the synopsis revolves around a disenchanted and depressed hit man who takes one last job, thus leading him and the viewers into a most certain dark heart of madness.

The rain has been coming down and the sky has a been a moody and turbulent gray all day. This seems most fitting for what I'm suspecting will be a psychological thriller meets madman blood bath.

I should add that I've been warned the ending is supposedly a Mind Blower. So much so that I won't be surprised if all the dead leaves in our patio end up on the other side the street.... I kid....sometimes...

Running off to the grocery store, going to get some dinner rolling, and then on to the movie! See you after the show!

Update!

THE WORLD IS FULL OF LIES!

I had this movie on my streaming Netflix queue! It was just there - I just saw it - I swear it!

Now it is gone.

Lucky #7... balls.

Well - new movie pick coming up quick!

Balls.

American Horror Story (Television Show, 2011)

October Challenge Day 6:

My day did not start off well.

First, I was running late, and then I had a jerk bus driver that charged me an extra .50 cents. I asked him why and that lead to an argument I was absolutely not expecting.

Driver: "Well, because you're going out of the city - you're going into another zone and that costs an extra .50 cents."

Me: "But I'm not going out of the city, I'm just going to - "

Driver: "I get on the viaduct and I go Out Of The City!"

Me: "You have stops before the city lines and that's where I'm going!"

There is a brief stare down but people are waiting, I pay the fee and sit behind the driver.

The driver takes off and adds, "Well. We have these new machines now. It tells us what to charge people." I Kid You Not, he said that while waving one hand in the air and sprinkling imaginary star dust on the bus fare machine.

My jaw dropped.

***

10 minutes and a mental note to call the Metro Customer Service line later, I arrive at my work place, show my badge to security, and then am promptly greeted by an unfamiliar cafeteria employee in my government office. At first I think he's saying "Hi!" No, he looking for brute force for one reason or another. He grabs my right arm as I pass and says, "You look tough, come on in and help us!"

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHO ARE YOU?

The work day just got silly from there. Not bad, just silly.

***

After work I'm rushing through downtown rush hour traffic to collect my paintings from a recent art show. To my shock and astonishment, I make it though the traffic in record time. I get to the show and the owner of the shop tells me, "You've sold a painting!"

YAY! Hey, this day isn't turning out so bad after all!

***

I get home, get the mail, and see that out home-visit bio medical assessments has arrived. My Husband has signed us up for every "see how healthy you are perk" available through our insurance plan - this is one of them...

"Well," I say, "Let's open these bad boys up and see how our health is doing!" Considering how my day has been so far, this could go 50/50.

We BOTH nailed it. We high-fived our HDL and LDL Cholesterol levels, our eGRF and Creatinine levels, our Triglycerides and total Cholesterol levels, etc.

So I say to him, all sweet and romantic like, "Let's celebrate. I JUST got an email from Netflix. American Horror Story Season 4 is now streaming....

***

And so that's what we're watching tonight! After all of the day's events, I find American Horror Story to be the pick of the evening. Why...and why is entire review almost entirely dedicated to my rambling? Because it's it's my blog and I can do what I want, and it's the October Challenge, these things happen.

I have found American Horror Story to be that perfect blend of today's Grimm's Fairy Tales meets grim headline news. This show, quite frankly, is really rather genius.

It's able to tap into our (U.S.) actual horrors, our (U.S) imaginary horrors, all the while creating characters that complicate everyone's collective version of right and wrong.

In all, I've found this TV show has been able to rip apart and put back together the 1000 piece blue sky puzzle that is nearly every real horror story, urban legend, or the masterpiece conjured up from the most creative  and disturbed imaginations.

Love this show.

I can not possibly provide a complete review of this show because I'm just now starting Season 4. But that doesn't mean you can't start it anytime time you want (yet another brilliant move on this series!). If this show is new to you - watch it now. If' it's old to you - rewatch it now. It's just so brilliant, wrong, right, and awesome (....a little like my day).

Suggested pairings: your favorite foods, your favorite drinks, your favorite settings. Get settled in with a loved one or just rock it on your own. Either way, prepare to see some awesome.
