This year I distinctly noticed that I was not the only one who decided September 1st is now the official start of Spooky Season (rather than October 1st). And I LOVE IT! Great minds, amiright?
It was around September 1st that I first saw a trailer for Shudder exclusive: The Mortuary Collection.
Folks, I can say with absolute certainty that when I saw just the few first seconds I knew this was going to be a goodie to kick off some spooky time. I was right, of course.
This bright, shiny, ghoulish grime fest is PERFECT to kick off the season - whether you are into the fun, lighter side of horror stories or prefer to saturate yourself in the more macabre - this little anthology is just FUN!
Here we follow a creepy mortician as he's looking to hire some help. A salty, arrogant, privileged girl shows up for an interview but she must first learn a few tricks of the trade by listening to a couple of the mortician's stories...
Is it cheesy? Absolutely! Pass the chips I'm going dippin'!
Is it gross? Sure is! I had plenty of face-making "Eegads!"
Is it creepy? Yep! The atmosphere - the set design is amazing!
Is it scary? Eh - if you're a hardened fan no, but it is entertaining. If you like chills and not having nightmares then also probably no, but it is entertaining.
Is it original? Strikingly so, considering the rather unoriginal plot. Bonus: you can never tell what world you're specifically in. This nightmare land lives somewhere between 1930s-2000s constantly, and seamlessly. It's lovely and FUN!
Is there a super, duper, crazy, epic fight scene? You bet your ass!
Regardless of your approach to horror films, I repeat: this is a great one to wind-down the evening with after talking a walk and noticing the leaves fall. Let that spooky-loving smile come out, curl up into your favorite comfy chair, and enjoy!
Pairs with slow-cooker foods, 1950's cocktail drinks, coco, soups, and consider busting out your goth attire. Best watched alone on a rainy night, or cuddled up with loads of pillows and blankets with your best cuddle buddies.
I watched this film on Shudder, or use the Find It! Watch It! links on Horror Habit's side bar to see where else you can find this deliciously demented fun fest.
